- Center table with height adjustment movable across three rows of seats
- Consistent lightweight construction, innovative locking system, new kinematics
- Multifunctional foldable flaps, spacious storage compartments
Grammer AG, May 19, 2022 - Grammer is bringing variability to the automotive interior: The company has designed a next-generation center console for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ new VW Multivan featuring consistent lightweight construction alongside innovative features and operating functions.
Passengers traveling in the latest member of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ internationally popular “Bulli” family will experience a completely new sense of spaciousness: In the new Multivan, the gear selector and handbrake have been relocated from the center tunnel to the instrument panel thanks to a shift-by-wire system. The interior designers have used the space gained in this way to install a rail system that runs from the first row of seats to the third one in the rear and on which the center table can be moved freely. For Grammer as the development partner, this was an exciting challenge: “We were able to contribute our expertise in the form of an innovative self-locking spring system, which we also patented for our customer,” says Jürgen Gerl, President Division Automotive at Grammer AG. The Grammer solution is convincing: The complete center table module can be moved smoothly and locked in any position thanks to an intuitive lever system. In addition, the locking mechanism meets the highest crash requirements.
The center table in the new VW Multivan can also be used at different heights: as a classic low shelf between the front seats or at working height in the rear. The table assembly, which can be extended upwards, can be expanded on either side to create generously dimensioned surfaces, while various cupholders and storage compartments provide ample space for drinks and both small and large items. The all-round increase in functionality does not come at the expense of weight, however: Grammer achieves best-in-class figures with the complete assembly thanks to consistent lightweight construction.
