- Clean, efficient, and modern: Interior in the new smart #1 E-SUV
- High, free-standing center console with innovative functionalities
Grammer AG, November 24, 2022 – That's smart: A center console that "flows" seamlessly from the cockpit into the interior, thus redefining the interior and taking on new functions. The first all-electric SUV smart #1 focuses on minimalist design and user-centric technology. As the development partner for the center console, Grammer worked with the car designers to create an innovative example of maximum space efficiency and optimum functionality.
Distinctive lines lead from the cockpit of the smart #1 ypsilon-shaped – elegantly accentuated by individual ambient lighting – into the high and free-standing center console. "With this contour and seamless connection, we are picking up on a key design feature in the exterior and interior, supporting the brand's approach of setting new trends in design, technology and the concept of the 'urban companion' with its compact E-SUV," says Jürgen Gerl, President Division Automotive at Grammer AG. For example, both air-conditioning outlets "migrated" from the dashboard to the center console for the first time. "Here, we were able to score points with our expertise in component integration and interface management, as well as with sustainable, noise-optimized solutions for the air ducts," says Gerl. The same applies to the soft surfaces in different color and texture variants and the virtually seamless integration of the three large compartments for smartphone (with wireless charging pad and USB socket), cupholder and armrest. Haptics, user-friendly operating comfort, and ergonomic design are tested in the company’s brand new ErgoLab, located at the German headquarters. “This is another advantage we offer, especially for cross-regional projects: Our best experts worldwide work closely with local teams to ensure proximity to the customer - in this case with the colleagues in China, where we are manufacturing the center consoles for the smart #1 plant in Xi’an.”
The minimalistic design – the smart #1 concentrates all operating functions in the large instrument cluster and reduces physical buttons in the interior – conceals innovative detailed solutions: For example, a retractable, infinitely adjustable, and extra soft armrest. Or the really smart idea of opening the center console at the level of the front seat edges: This not only creates an airy atmosphere, but above all a generous storage compartment accessible from both sides for (hand) bags or larger beverage bottles.
