Ubility Shift from Grammer for urban passenger transport: Next-generation leaning, holding and sitting solution

Beitrag teilen:

  • Premiere of an innovative leaning and sitting support system in buses and trains
  • Design inspired by insights from evolutionary psychology
  • Advantages: Lightweight construction and flexible configuration

Grammer AG, November 18, 2021 – Ubility Shift accommodates the inherent human need to lean against things: the ultra-lightweight leaning and seating module for short-haul urban distances offers a combination of upholstered, body-high supports and ergonomically designed grab handles. With this next-generation solution, which is part of the brand-new Ubility One integrated interior system, Grammer is focusing on people and their transportation usage profiles.

“We know from evolutionary psychology the primal human need to position yourself with your back to the wall in publicly accessible spaces in order to seek protection and safety,” says Dr. Andreas Diehl, President Division Commercial Vehicles at Grammer AG. “This inspired our central design approach in developing Ubility Shift, a stable support for leaning against with a handle design to hold on to.” Yet, Grammer’s innovation for buses and trains can do even more: The upholstered part slides down when body pressure is applied and, thanks to clever kinematics, releases a seating surface that provides a welcome opportunity for a quick rest on short urban trips.

The Ubility Shift is primarily designed for zones with high change frequencies in urban transportation. With its modular design, it can be adapted to a wide variety of passenger interiors: as an “island” of three, in configurations of two for the center of the passenger area or along windows and walls and as stand-alone solutions as well. This means that there are (almost) no limits to urban transit providers’ specific design preferences. Other advantages provided by Grammer’s new system include weight savings thanks to consistent lightweight construction and the extremely small space requirements in relation to the holding, leaning and sitting functionality offered: In the three-person configuration, the Ubility Shift requires only one square meter of space.
